J.J. Kelly clinches LPD baseball title

J.J. Kelly clinched the Lonesome Pine District regular season baseball title Tuesday with a 27-12 decision over rival J.I. Burton.

The Indians (14-4, 12-1) scored 11 runs in the first inning and finished with 26 hits. Devan Sproles collected four hits and six RBIs, while Cody Bentley, Matt Dotson and Will Strength each added four hits.

Justin Wilson, Zak Clifton and Sproles all homered for Kelly, which earned an automatic berth into the Region D Tournament to be played at Kelly on May 29-June 1.

The Indians travel to Coeburn Thursday.

I would have to assume they are the favorites to win the Region.

I would expect the Indians to win the Region. How far they'll advance up state is the big question.

i think they have the pitching to keep them in ballgames. with the bats swinging like they are, the pitchers just need to keep the score close.

JJK obviously has some great pitchers and talent. I can only imagine how much more effective they would be with Bentley pitching.

I think it depends on what region they will have to face after getting out of D, which is extremely weak this year. The winner and runner-up of Region C is going to be very tough for any team to beat. James River is currently ranked 13th in the nation according to CNN.com and Grayson County has defeated some of the top teams in SWVA including Abingdon and Richlands. The lack of competition in Region D will hurt J.J. Kelly once they get to the bigger games.

I was thinking that Region D would automatically be matched up with Region C, likewise A with B.

don't know too much about the other regions, but the James River that is nationally ranked is from Midlothian, VA which is in Chesterfield County and is a AAA school. There is a James River in region C that is single A and pretty good however. Maybe this is why Kelly played some bigger schools in their non-district schedule. Don't know just a thought.
